The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is the organisation responsible for the implementation of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme across Australia.
AHPRA's operations are governed by the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009, as in force in each state and territory, which came into effect on 1 July 2010. This law means that for the first time in Australia, 10 health professions are regulated by nationally consistent legislation. From 1 July 2012, four new professions will join the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.
AHPRA supports the 10 National Health Practitioner Boards that are responsible for regulating the 10 health professions. The primary role of the Boards is to protect the public and they set standards and policies that all registered health practitioners must meet. AHPRA also supports the four Health Practitioner Boards for the 2012 Professions.
The Agency Management Committee oversees the work of AHPRA. The Chair is Mr Peter Allen.
The CEO of AHPRA is Mr Martin Fletcher who is based in our national office in Melbourne. Our staff are based in eight State and Territory AHPRA offices, as well as our national office.
