Restriction: Complete continuing professional development

National Restrictions Library 2.0: This restriction applies to restictions imposed or accepted from 16 September 2024. For restrictions imposed or accepted before this date please see the National Restrictions Library 1.0.

Restriction description

A practitioner with this restriction must complete some continuing professional development (CPD). CPD is ongoing planned activities that ensure a practitioner remains up to date with best practice in their profession.

Each Board’s registration standard for CPD outlines the type and amount of CPD practitioners must do. This type of restriction usually applies to practitioners who have not completed the required amount of CPD. The amount of CPD required depends on what the shortfall was.

The practitioner must show evidence that they completed the CPD.

We monitor compliance by checking that the practitioner:

  • meets required timeframes
  • proposes education that meets our registration standard and any related guidelines
  • completes all required CPD.

The contact details for your case officer are included on all our correspondence with you.

We also encourage you to use independent support services, including those provided on our Practitioner support services page.

You can also contact your legal representative or professional union to support you.

Contact Ahpra using the details provided in your monitoring plan. You may be able to apply for a change in your restrictions, or an extension of time to complete the required CPD. Circumstances are considered on a case-by-case basis.

You must keep a record of all your CPD activities and provide this to demonstrate you have met the requirements of the conditions. Your record of CPD generally consists of a logbook and supporting evidence. Supporting evidence is documentation that demonstrates you have completed the CPD activity. Examples include a certificate of attendance or notes from self-directed study.

Each Board has specific information regarding evidence requirements for CPD on their website. This may also include record keeping templates and examples to assist you. You should familiarise yourself with the Board specific CPD information available on the Ahpra website

Planning your CPD is important to ensure you get the most out of your CPD activities. To plan your CPD you will need to identify your learning goals and plan CPD activities in order to meet your goals.

This process is an opportunity for you to review best practice standards or evidence-based practice, work on your limitations and improve your practice to develop your competencies and strengths.

It may be helpful to discuss your CPD plan with a mentor, supervisor or colleague who can assist in identify learning needs and CPD activities.

Once you have completed the CPD activity, you can reflect on what you have learnt and whether you have achieved your learning goals.

Some Boards have further guidance and templates to assist in planning your CPD. You should familiarise yourself with the Board specific CPD information available on the Ahpra website

You must not include the CPD completed for the restrictions as part of meeting your CPD requirements for the current renewal period.

During a CPD audit, Ahpra will assess whether the CPD required to satisfy restrictions has been included in CPD submissions in subsequent years.

If you do include it as part of your CPD requirements, you may be required to complete the shortfall in your CPD requirements for the renewal period and/or the Board may decide to take other regulatory action.

You must contact your Ahpra case officer or team as soon as possible if you have had a change of circumstances or are unable to comply with the requirements for any reason. See your monitoring plan for contact information.
