2016/17 AHPRA Annual Report now published

The Annual Report for AHPRA and the National Boards for the year to 30 June 2017 is now available to view online.

The report provides a nationwide snapshot and highlights a multi-profession approach to risk-based regulation across the work of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. Our mission is to make sure that Australians have access to a safe and competent registered health workforce.

Insights from the year include:

• More practitioners: There were 21,000 more registered health practitioners, totalling 678,938 health practitioners across the 14 regulated professions. Student registrations increased by more than 3,000 registrants to 157,213.
• Growth in notifications: This year, AHPRA received more notifications than in any other year since the National Scheme began (6,898), an increase of 13.9% nationally (1.6% of the registration base). The top three notifier complaints related to clinical care (42.8%), medication issues (11.9%) and health impairment (8.4%).
• Improved management of notifications about practitioners: While we received more notifications than ever before, we also closed more than ever before during the year (6,669).
• Dealing with advertising-related complaints: This year saw the formation of a strengthened team within AHPRA dedicated to managing complaints about advertising and other statutory offence breaches. This year, we received 1,895 advertising-related complaints and 368 new offence complaints relating to title protection.
• Ensuring public safety through monitoring and compliance: 4,952 practitioners had their registration monitored in 2016/17. The majority of active monitoring cases related to additional requirements in relation to suitability and eligibility for registration.
