The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) has been contracted by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care (the Department) to conduct a review of the National Prescribing Competencies Framework (the framework). Ahpra is now consulting on the revised framework and invites you to provide feedback.
The framework describes the competencies for appropriate, safe and effective prescribing across relevant health professions. It aims to create a shared understanding of the person-centred prescribing process and supports:
Following some research activities, the framework and its structure around person-centred care appears overall to remain fit for purpose. Some updates are proposed to ensure that the framework is contemporary and reflects current and emerging trends in education and multi-profession practices. It is important that the framework remains up-to-date and supports best health outcomes within a fast-evolving health environment.
Although the framework isn’t typically used by the public, it puts the person receiving care in the centre of the prescribing process. This approach supports the person to actively participate in decision-making for treatment options and more broadly to support the safe use of medicines. To encourage public feedback, Ahpra has published a shorter version of the consultation document .
You can provide feedback before the consultation closes on 30 May 2025.
Information about the framework and this review is available on the Ahpra website.
