Call for applications for appointment to the Scheduled Medicines Advisory Committee of the Optometry Board of Australia.

The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme regulates more than 670,000 registered health practitioners and over 150,000 registered students across 14 health professions. It also accredits over 740 approved programs of study delivered by over 330 education providers.

The Optometry Board of Australia (the Board) invites applications from registered optometrists and medical practitioners seeking appointment to the Scheduled Medicines Advisory Committee (the Committee).

The Board is seeking applications from:

  • one optometrist who holds an endorsement for scheduled medicines (endorsed optometrist),
  • one endorsed optometrist who is an academic/educator in optometry, and
  • one medical practitioner who practises as an ophthalmologist.

The Board regulates more than 5400 registered optometrists. The primary role of the Board is to protect the public. The Board works in partnership with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

The role of the Committee is to advise the Board on the following matters with respect to the administration or prescribing of scheduled medicines by optometrists for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes:

  • the scheduled medicines or classes of medicines that are suitable for optometrists to administer or prescribe
  • any guidelines that might be required to support safe, competent and effective prescribing or administration practice by optometrists, and
  • any other matters that the Board may refer from time to time.

The National Scheme has a commitment to increasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ leadership and voices. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply, as are people from rural or regional areas in Australia.

Appointments are for a period of up to three years and are expected to commence in May 2018.

More information about the roles, eligibility requirements and the application process can be found in the information guide and application form below.
