The Accreditation Advisory Committee is established to provide oversight and leadership on significant whole of scheme accreditation issues including governance, accountability and transparency issues.

Michael Gorton is appointed as one of the Agency Management Committee members of the Accreditation Advisory Committee. Mr Gorton is also appointed as the Chair of the Agency Management Committee for a three year term from March 2016. Mr Gorton was first appointed to the Agency Management Committee in March 2009 as a member with business and administrative expertise, and first appointed as Chair in April 2014.
Mr Gorton is a commercial lawyer with considerable experience providing legal advice on medical registration, training, education and administrative practice. As a principal of Russell Kennedy Lawyers, he has significant experience in business management and administration.
He is a former Chair of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission. He is the Chair of Alfred Health and a Board member of Ambulance Victoria and the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine.
In 2004, Mr Gorton received the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for community service.
Karen Crawshaw is appointed as one of the Agency Management Committee members of the Accreditation Advisory Committee Adjunct Professor Crawshaw was reappointed to the Agency Management Committee as a member with expertise in health business and administration for a three year term from March 2016. She was first appointed in September 2012.
Adjunct Professor Crawshaw holds Bachelor degrees in Arts and Law, is admitted to the NSW Supreme Court and High Court and holds an unrestricted practising certificate from the NSW Law Society.
Adjunct Professor Crawshaw has held various government legal positions, including NSW Health’s Director Legal and General Counsel for 17 years. In 2007 Ms Crawshaw was appointed as a Deputy Director-General. In her most recent senior executive role as Deputy Secretary, Governance, Workforce and Corporate she had policy responsibility within NSW Health for corporate governance, workforce, industrial relations, business reform, asset management and procurement, strategic communications, ministerial and executive services and legal and regulatory services. Adjunct Professor Crawshaw left NSW Health in June 2017. She is appointed as an adjunct professor with the University of Sydney Medical School and acts as an on-line moderator in the Safety and Quality of Health Care course for masters students in the University’s School of Public Health.
Adjunct Professor Crawshaw was awarded the Public Service Medal in 2012 for her significant contributions to the public sector.
Susan Young is appointed as one of the Agency Management Committee members of the Accreditation Advisory Committee. Dr Young is a registered nurse and midwife with expertise in health, education and training, governance, regulation and accreditation. She was appointed to the Agency Management Committee for three years from 14 June 2017.
Dr Young has had an extensive involvement in regulation, most recently as the Chair of the Queensland Board of the Medical Board of Australia until December 2016, and a subsequent appointment as a community member for a further three year term. She fulfilled positions within the tertiary setting until July 2015, with appointments as a Director of Teaching and Learning, and as a Program Director in the (then) School of Nursing and Midwifery at The University of Queensland. Dr Young has experience in all facets of curriculum development, implementation and evaluation of health related education. She has also been engaged in accreditation activities in a range of capacities including as an education provider, as a member of the TEQSA Panel of Experts, and as an independent assessor in Australia and internationally.
Prior to her appointment within the tertiary sector, Dr Young held a number of executive positions within the public and private health care sectors in metropolitan, regional and rural settings. She holds several postgraduate qualifications in education, including a Doctorate in Education from the Queensland University of Technology.
Lynette Cusack is appointed to the Accreditation Advisory Committee as a chair of a National Board. Associate Professor Cusack is a registered nurse and Chair of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. She is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Adelaide and works one day a week at a large metropolitan hospital as a research consultant for nurses and midwives.
Associate Professor Cusack previously worked in community health settings, including home nursing, community health centres and drug and alcohol services. She has over 14 years’ experience in nursing and midwifery regulation.
Christine Ewan is appointed to the Accreditation Advisory Committee as an external expert in accreditation. Christine is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Wollongong, and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Education & Anthropology), a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (Hons), a Master of Arts with merit in Social Anthropology and a PhD in Medical Education, all from The University of Sydney. She is an Inaugural Fellow of the Australian Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Emeritus Professor Ewan’s current work is at the nexus of education and health and includes providing expert advice to Universities and other higher education related agencies regarding the design and delivery of higher education qualifications and professional education programs, and working alongside education institutions, providing practical advice and support, as they prepare to comply with quality assurance regulations.
Emeritus Professor Ewan’s previous roles include Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Pro Vice Chancellor Academic and Dean at the University of Wollongong with responsibility for strategic planning, faculty performance, academic quality assurance, and teaching and learning support and infrastructure. Professor Ewan was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2004 for service to tertiary education and administration, to public health, to distance education by improving access to services, and to the community of the Illawarra region.
Professor Ewan has held a range of positions relevant to higher education quality assurance including senior academic adviser to the Australian Learning and Teaching Council, Higher Education Standards Panel Research Fellow, an accredited auditor for the former Australian Universities Quality Agency, foundation chair of the Australian Council of Deans of Health Sciences, former chair and later managing director of the National Breast Cancer Centre and former chair of the Public Health Research and Development Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). Professor Ewan has served on numerous other national committees spanning both health and education including the Australian Osteopathic Council, the Australian Environmental Health Council and the Australian Universities Teaching Committee.
Susan Gould is appointed to the Accreditation Advisory Committee as a community member of a National Board. Dr Gould is also appointed as a community member of the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia. Dr Gould is an experienced non-executive director having held directorships in a diverse range of industries including superannuation; insurance; health; trans-national education (Singapore), on-line postgraduate teaching; IT software development; and private school education.
Dr Gould has more than 20 years’ experience in academic administration and senior executive roles in Australian universities. Prior to her retirement from employment in the academic sector, Dr Gould was Deputy Vice Chancellor (Services) and University Secretary at the University of Newcastle with responsibility for a comprehensive range of corporate and executive services as well as institutional corporate governance and compliance. Dr Gould is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and an Advanced Graduate of the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees.
Before taking up her senior management and executive roles, Dr Gould was involved in scientific research both in Australia and the UK, in the areas of plant physiology and biochemistry. She also held teaching positions at both Flinders and Melbourne Universities and at the Gordon TAFE College in Geelong..
