Continuing professional development (CPD) is how health practitioners maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities required throughout their professional lives.
Health practitioners who are engaged in any form of practice are required to participate regularly in CPD that is relevant to their scope of practice in order to maintain, develop, update and enhance their knowledge, skills and performance to help them deliver appropriate and safe care.
Revised CPD registration standards for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice, Chinese medicine, chiropractic and occupational therapy boards took effect on 1 December 2019. See further details in the related news item.
These new standards were developed after a review of the existing standards, which included public consultation. The consultation report provides an overview of the consultation process, rationale for any changes and sets out the proposed way forward, including areas where further work is planned.
