We recognise and understand the Minister’s concerns in relation to recent reports that chiropractors in Victoria may be performing unproven and potentially unsafe procedures on young children and infants and chiropractors advising parents against vaccinating their children.
The public are entitled to receive safe, ethical and competent care from chiropractors. The Chiropractic Board of Australia regulates individual chiropractors and sets the standards they must meet. The requirement for chiropractors to provide care to the public that is evidence-based is a key component of the professional standards, codes and guidelines to which the Board expects practitioners to adhere.
Practitioners are expected to practise safely and within the limits of their competency, training and expertise. This applies to all registered practitioners across the 14 professions in the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.
AHPRA and the Board have a number of investigations underway, particularly in relation to advertising claims being made by chiropractors. While we cannot discuss individual matters to protect the integrity of the processes underway, we will provide updates within the requirements of the National Law.
AHPRA and the Board are always concerned if there are any chiropractors not meeting their obligations. If anyone has concerns about a practitioner, they should contact AHPRA on 1300 419 495.
